You should undertake COMM1301 Editing 1B at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice. This is a co-requisite course.

Course Description

This course gives you an overview of processes used in the production of books and electronic publications for the general and educational sectors of the Australian book industry. Through industry case studies, you will analyse the production and design implications of changing technologies in prepress and printing within the various sectors of the market. The course will provide you with the necessary knowledge and tools to select formats and platforms for a variety of publication outcomes.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically discuss the diverse issues concerning formats and platforms for both print and electronic publications.
  2. Identify and evaluate the different production processes and how they impact on print and ebook production.
  3. Apply different costing models for ebooks and print books and evaluate how these models impact on production.
  4. Investigate and critically analyse the ebook market both locally and globally.


 


Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  1. Critically analyse and identify the future directions – opportunities and challenges – for book publishing.
  2. Acquire and apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary publishing practice.
  3. Employ appropriate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to solve problems associated with book publishing.
  4. Undertake research into contemporary media and communication theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions.
     


Overview of Learning Activities

Each class will be a combination of lecture and seminar components. Industry practitioners will explain and illustrate their context in the publishing supply chain. Classes will provide opportunities for group discussion around lecture material as well as you own experiences. Assessment will enable you to explain key elements of production processes and consolidate your knowledge of print components.
