Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students must have a thorough understanding of the theory related to multimedia cartography and geovisualization. In addition, students must have basic skills in HTML and web page design.


Course Description

This course provides a practical program that covers the use of interactive multimedia and the Web for the development of mapping products. Emphasis is placed on the development process and on equipping students with the necessary skills across a broad range of technologies and tools used to build interactive mapping applications. Students are required to adapt and use multimedia and web technologies, techniques and theory and to apply cartographic theory in order to design and deliver an effective product for the visualisation of geospatial information.

At the conclusion this course, you will able to:
• To develop knowledge about multimedia, the Web and the design of usable multimedia cartographic products.
• To be able to apply cartographic theory to the development of interactive multimedia and Web products.

• To develop an understanding of the scheduling, management and work flow processes associated with developing interactive multimedia products.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course is run as a series of lectures and studio sessions. A weekly lecture presents the design and development theory that students are expected to apply to the development of their major project – an interactive multimedia cartographic product. Attendance at lectures is essential to ensure that students are fully equipped for studio sessions. Two-hour studio sessions also run weekly. Sessions consist of a number of practical sessions involving the use of a range of multimedia and web development software tools  and sessions that focus on the development of the major project (applying material covered during the lecture program). Consultation sessions are also scheduled, designed for students to obtain design and usability feedback relating to their major project.
