Course Description
This course provides an overview of Architectural Ceramics from a historical and contemporary perspective. Ceramics, in an architectural context, has very strong social and cultural links with architecture, design craft guilds, and the fine arts. As such, this subject will engage and enrich any student with an interest in any of these areas.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Students will gain a broad understanding of the application of ceramics both as a material for construction and applied design, within a range of social and cultural contexts.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course is both lecture and tutorial based.
The lecture series will be a combination of seminar, slide, practical demonstration, class exercises, and excursions. Students will be required to participate in learning activities through individual research and class presentations, as well as practical exercises, to gain an in depth understanding of the subject.
Overview of Learning Resources
Students will be required to access library and online resources.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment will comprise two assignments:
1. A class diary sustained throughout the semester.
2. A 10 – 12 minute ‘PowerPoint’ or data projection presentation, accompanied by a 500 – 100 word essay, including bibliography, based on a specific topic relating to course material and negotiated with the lecturer.
