ENVI1188 Sustainability Project 3 or equivalent.

Course Description

The Sustainability Project 1-4 courses progress through the program via one major project (there is an option of multiple smaller projects of increasing sophistication of engagement).

During the course you will explore a particular area of sustainability negotiated with your supervisor and develop a project report on that issue.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for MC240 Master of Sustainable Practice

S4 - Communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

S5 - Technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship.

A2 - With high level personal autonomy and accountability.

A3 - To plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship.

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Use research skills to develop a succinct project brief
  2. Research across disciplines highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches to completing a sustainability project
  3. Develop options for solving a complex sustainability problem
  4. Outline various priorities for allocating options to sustainability problem and rank accordingly to arrive at a preferred solution
  5. Prepare a concise report outlining solutions to sustainability problem

Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities in this course are embodied in workshops, their preparation and post workshop activities. These workshops are formed around the sustainability project work. In particular activities will include:

  • Participate in workshop sessions 
  • Work in a group
  • Develop a learning contract 
  • Identify problem for a project 
  • Read about sustainability problems and issues, from a range of perspectives – economic, social, and environmental 
  • Research the problem from different perspectives – economic, social, and environmental. 
  • Explore personal motivations in a journal and learning contract

During the course you will explore a particular area of sustainability negotiated with your supervisor.

Course information and learning materials will be provided through myRMIT or in class. Lists of reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided.

Overview of Assessment

☒This course has no hurdle requirements.

The course assessment reflects the aim to encourage research on a topic of sustainability thus assessment is heavily weighted towards the production of a Research Report.
