Students should have completed a university degree. This course is aimed at postgraduate students.
Course Description
This course will develop the tools necessary for effective communication of scientific information in a post-graduate environment. Written, oral and electronic communication skills will be developed. In addition to formal lectures, students will also work in small groups with tutorial assistance.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will develop the following capabilities:
1. Ability to communicate using a variety of media.
2. Ability to use appropriate systems to access information from a variety of sources.
3. Ability to work as part of a team.
Overview of Learning Activities
Students will receive an introduction to the use of learning resources and facilities at RMIT. They will be provided with learning resources that they can work through in their own time at their own pace. Students will complete self-directed, self-paced study presented on-line through the university’s Distributed Learning System (DLS), and work in a team to develop material in their program of study. Written and oral presentations will be completed and reviewed by the student group.
Overview of Learning Resources
The course will be based on references to current scientific articles and articles on laboratory methods. Additional reference materials will be supplied by lecturers. Students can access material on the RMIT online system (BlackBoard).
Overview of Assessment
The assessment will include an e-journal, poster presentation, oral presentation, and a written assignment.
