This course articulates with the Radiologic Imaging Methods 3 curriculum and aims to further extend the knowledge base of the student towards the practice of advanced medical imaging procedures.

Course Description

This course focuses upon contemporary practices in advanced radiologic imaging, along with issues related to professional practice in the healthcare environment. Each module is designed to complement the clinical practice and technology courses and explores theoretical concepts relevant to the real world clinical imaging environment. Significant emphasis is placed on the application of developing technology and advanced imaging procedures.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The main objective of this course is for students to demonstrate an understanding of advanced imaging procedures and professional practice in a holistic manner. The capabilities addressed include the ability to discuss the application of radiologic imaging procedures and technologies with professional colleagues and the wider healthcare community, including patient preparation for each modality, and any biological risk associated with the use of ionising and non-ionising radiation. Life long learning outcomes are emphasised by enhancing students capabilities in critically reviewing published peer reviewed literature relevant to radiological and associated imaging procedures

Overview of Learning Activities

Formal lectures are utilised to introduce and explore each topic area, and to guide self-directed study activities.  Key concepts and their clinical application will be explained and illustrated in lectures.  This course also has an online DLS site where weekly questions pertaining to lecture content and assigned readings will be posed to students. 

Overview of Learning Resources

The course has an entry on the DLS and students will be referred to this site at the commencement of semester. This resource provides a range of materials aimed at supporting learning activities throughout the semester and students are encouraged to actively use this site and the material it contains. Students are also expected to conduct a significant level of self-directed learning to reinforce the concepts discussed in formal lectures. There is a particular expectation that students will access appropriate peer reviewed journal articles via the RMIT library database.

Overview of Assessment

Students are required to successfully complete a range of assessment activities to complete this course.   The range of assessment activities include: mid-semester tests, submission of written material and end of semester tests.  Please refer to Part B of the course guide for details on the overall weightings of each assessment task.  The date, time and venue of the end semester test will be announced by the Program Co-ordinator.
