Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course extends the principles introduced to the students in the previous Radiation Therapy Technology courses and provides them with an understanding of advanced imaging techniques in this field, including MRI and PET. This course will have both common and stream specific elements.

Students will be expected to have successfully completed both ONPS2355 Radiation Therapy Technology 3 and RADI1146 Radiation Therapy Methods 3 as pre-requisites.  This course is also co-requisite with  RADI1149 Radiation Therapy Practice 4.


Course Description

Radiation Therapy Technology 4 provides students with a comprehensive coverage of the physical and instrumental basis of advanced imaging modalities and planning technologies applied in clinical radiation therapy. Throughout, recent technological developments and the current state-of-the-art in instrumentation are explored. Also the students will learn about the ultrasound and its applications in radiotehrapy. This course also includes image registeration and fusion.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will be expected to be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the underlying physical and technological principles of the advanced radiation therapy treatment techniques used in contemporary radiation therapy practice. They will also be expected to demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the principles behind dynamic wedges, and the effect of target motion on radiation therapy practice, as well as an understanding of the application of MRI based technologies in RT
The capabilities addressed in this course include the ability to evaluate and apply the scientific principles underpinning radiation therapy practices, and the ability to gather and utilise a wide range of resources to investigate issues relating to radiation therapy, including advanced practice and instrumentation.


Upon successful completion of Radiation Therapy Technology 4, students will be able to:


• demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the physical and technological principles which underpin the imaging modalities, planning techniques and treatment methods that they encounter clinically;
• apply this understanding to effectively solve problems which arise in the clinical environment;
• exhibit increased fluency in the use of specialist terminology encountered clinically and which relates to tomographic imaging and associated treatment planning procedures;
• ultrasound specific; and
• Implications of latest imaging techniques for clinical radiation therapy treatment planning.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment tasks may include a formal examination to measure the level of understanding of theoretical principles and concepts gained by students, an e-portfolio to evaluate specific problem based learning in the advanced instrumentation area. as well as  tests and assignments to provide feedback and asses students on their level of understanding of material in the main methods lectures.
