Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students should have a basic knowledge of industry structures, professional roles and production techniques used in either the television or radio industries (successful completion of COMM-2249 TV2 or COMM-2252 Radio 2).


Course Description

This is a third year course in the professional strand of the Bachelor of Communication (Media) degree.
 
Media Industries 1 provides you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge of the media industries. It will enable you to develop your skills in researching these industries, to ensure you can effectively learn, adapt, innovate and ultimately lead within a rapidly changing professional environment.

The course is designed to assist you to articulate into the media industries once you have completed your degree. It aims to contextualise your individual interests and skills within a broader, more in-depth understanding of contemporary mediascapes, including a survey of possible future directions.

It is expected that you will undertake research across a range of areas and utilise a range of professional research techniques in investigating chosen topics. In the process, you will develop an understanding of the importance of networks and networking in the media industries.

You will also develop your knowledge and experience of professional media industry practices through completion of your work attachment.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

I.    analyse media industries, theories and practices in Australian, international and cross-cultural contexts
II.    identify, analyse and solve problems relevant to media practice
III.    work collaboratively and take leadership within teams
IV.    evaluate and contribute to social and media developments, and adapt your practice in a complex and changing world


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1.    identify and analyse key current and potential future media industry issues
2.    conduct applied collaborative research at an advanced level
3.    design an applied research strategy appropriate to the identified problem
4.    reflect on the process and outcomes of the research
5.    be able to publicly communicate professional research in appropriate forms


Overview of Learning Activities

Media Industries 1 offers a range of learning activities centred around the development and completion of collaborative research projects. The learning activities include:

  •     lectures
  •     seminars;
  •     presentations;
  •     guest speakers;
  •     workshops;
  •     problem solving sessions;
  •     individual and group based reflection;
  •     receiving and providing feedback;

It is expected that you will regularly attend classes and collaborative group meetings where you will report, reflect upon, and at times debate your findings and the research process.


Overview of Learning Resources

Student research in this course should include:

  1.     approaching individuals and organizations in the media industries
  2.     utlitisation of a wide range of industry resources including:
  •     online information resources
  •     audio-visual materials that are available through the library or that are generated as part of the research process
  •     relevant books, journals, industry and government reports etc
