Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students are required to have successfully completed EEET2276 - Electrical/Electronic Principles or equivalent course with evidence of equivalent capabilities.


Course Description

This course introduces the student to principles of electrical and electronic design concepts including project management and planning of the design procedures, specification of design project scope, CAD and Protel applications, circuit simulation, application of Australian standards in the design phase, project design; construction testing; commissioning and report writing and circuit protection.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will gain or improve capabilities in:
Technical Competence:
• TC1, 2, 3 & 4: knowledge in CAD, Protel and PSPICE softwares usage, circuit protection principles, cables selection for various applications, electrical and electronic circuit design principles will be strengthened or further developed through theory and laboratory experience.
Integrative Perspective:
• IP1, 2, & 3: student will use established theory to develop processes in solving design project problems, to interpret Australian Standard requirements in order to carry out the design tasks. This course prepares students to be able to plan, design electrical installation or electronic equipment, with an ability to draw, assembles and tests the device. Student will increase analytical and problem solving ability in project design and construction to meet the specification or standard.
Professional Practice:
• PP1: Student capabilities will be improved through the presentation of design documentation, written and verbal reports, and group work in design project.


On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• plan and define requirements for the particular design task.
• select and interpret appropriate Australian Standard requirements;
• carry out the design of an electronic device
• analyse and compare possible design strategies for meeting task requirements


Overview of Learning Activities


The learning activities included in this course are:
• attendance at lectures and laboratory sessions where syllabus material will be presented and explained, and the subject will be illustrated with demonstrations and examples;
• completion of tutorial questions, laboratory exercises and designed projects outlined to further practice interpretation application of Australian standards in design procedures, and to give feedback on student progress and understanding;
• completion of design project consisting of numerical and other problems requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and
• private study, working through the course as presented in classes and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving conceptual and numerical problems.


Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Learning Hub (also known as online@RMIT) and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class. Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided. Students will also use laboratory equipment and computer software within the School during project and assignment work.


Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this course comprises of a mixture of written and assessable practical assignments, progress tests and a final exam in either short answer, multi choice or a mixture of the two.

Written assignments and the presentation will be used to provide feedback to students on their progress in the course during the semester.
