Course Description

‘Principles of Technical Photography’ is designed to introduce you to the equipment, techniques, materials and processes found in technical and industrial photography environments. It gives you a theoretical and practical background in photography as it applies to this profession. Principles of Technical Photography focuses on the precision and standardization required to document important data.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will assist in the development of professional skills and create a base of academic knowledge enabling you to produce high quality photographic images and assist in problem solving by creating these images when requested by fellow scientists and professionals.
 


At the end of the course you will be able to:

• Make quality photographs for technical & industrial documentation with specialized equipment.
• Have a basic understanding of protocol and procedures when photographing precious objects, artefacts, specimens and other scientific subjects.
• Use proper terminology when discussing scientific imaging.
• Write proper reports documenting your photographic assignments under the guidelines of the scientific method.
• Select the appropriate equipment, films and processes to properly document subjects associated with various disciplines and sciences.
• Present work in a professional manner.


Overview of Learning Activities

The content associated with this course will be delivered by lecture and demonstration. You will be required to take notes and undertake further study/research on weekly topics outside of scheduled classes. You will be required to produce a folio of work demonstrating technical and visual skills related to the assignments delivered with this course.


Overview of Learning Resources

There is no single textbook for this course, as the breadth of topics are covered in multiple sources. Lectures will be supported with handouts, materials distributed online via the DLS and specific references where appropriate. You will be encouraged to keep a Computation Book of all assignments. You will be required to undertake further reading and study of the weekly topics from appropriate texts held within the library, related periodicals, journals, and WWW resources.
 


Overview of Assessment

Assessment is based on progressive folio assignments of practical assignment work, a final comprehensive portfolio of photographic work, and a written test to assess the understanding of theory and principles..
