While no pre-requisite course is specified, students would benefit from a knowledge of and interest in sustainability issues in general. 


Course Description

This course examines what a sustainable city of the future might look like. Can we plan today to develop the models that we will need to maintain the expectations of current lifestyles as we adapt to climate change with a carbon-neutral, urban infrastructure?

This University Student Elective course which incorporates an international study tour component is aimed at addressing the major issues of climate change and meeting sustainability criteria. It starts by considering the attributes of a successful city and how these can be improved to make future cities more sustainable.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is a University Student Elective open to RMIT students enrolled in a variety of formal programs of study.  After completing the course students will have a greater knowledge of sustainability and acquire skills to help adapt to climate change. 
Students will also gain experience working in a team environment on complex multidisciplinary problems affecting society.


On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Describe the interrelationship between sustainability and urban development
  2. Identify and elaborate the socio-economic forces driving the formation of cities
  3. Use reflective practice to construct a vision of a more sustainable city emphasising the study area chosen
  4. Discuss and compare the differences in sustainability  practices in foreign countries

 


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities vary as this course is based on an intensive international study component.

The assessment is primarily based on a project report based on a particular topic of your choosing. Individual topics will be approved following discussion with the course-coordinator.

Total study hours: 120 study hours. The balance of formal (face-to-face), on-line and independent study hours could vary, depending on the format for individual offerings of this course. Students can expect to complete approximately two weeks in another country.

Assessment Tasks:

Assessment 1: Project Scope and Brief (Week 2) 15%

CLO 1 & 2
Assessment 2: Project Report (50%) and Reflective Piece (35%)
