Satisfactorily completion of the Foundations of Practice 1 & 2, Assessment & Intervention 1 & 2, Specialist Practice 1 & 2, Internal Practicum 1k 2, 3 & 4, and Advanced Doctoral Training 1. Course Description

This course is undertaken in Semester 2 of the third year of the Doctorate in Psychology for both professional training streams. It comprises a single unit: Advanced Clinical Skills 2. This unit builds on the knowledge and skills learned in first two and a half years of the Doctoral degree. It is an advanced unit in which students act as co-supervisors with staff in supervising the assessment and management of selected cases in the RMIT Psychology Clinic. Students will also participate in advanced training in a range of problem types including family intervention, significant trauma, and treatment resistance.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will develop personal and professional awareness and skills in facilitation.

Students will be expected to be able to:
1. demonstrate an ability to successfully co-supervise two cases in the RMIT Psychology Clinic.
2. competently participate in a series of advanced skill training activities in a range of problem types including family intervention, significant trauma, and treatment resistance.

Overview of Learning Activities

Students will extend their professional knowledge and skills through active participation in case supervision through the opportunity to practise these skills via co-supervision in the RMIT Psychology Clinic. The opportunity to develop and simulate in practice, advanced clinical interventions with specialist populations will also be provided.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will receive guidance from lecturers in terms of specific readings, references, and library resources. Students will also participate in case discussion, case simulations, and co-supervision of clinic cases to further consolidate learning.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment in this course will be in two parts: (a) satisfactory involvement as a co-therapist in two cases; and (b) attendance and active participation in the advanced skill sessions.
