Course Description

The course establishes a materials skill base appropriate to the alternative studio. It encourages the development of an individual aesthetic with an emphasis on complementing the student’s subject major.
The subject establishes a practical and intellectual basis for addressing conceptual, perceptual formal and aesthetic concerns as related to the Alternative studio. There are a range of topics on offer each semester. These topics are distributed to students each semester.
Students will be required to develop the practice of documenting their work and keeping notes.
Students will be encouraged to cultivate an awareness of traditional and contemporary practice by appropriate use of library resources.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Demonstrate a basic competency in the production of work assigned within the specific alternative studio.
Gain knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues as they apply to the production of work within specific alternative studio courses and be able to adopt and identify safe working practices.


At the completion of the course, the student will:
• Have competency in using the materials and processes investigated in the alternative studio
• Have an understanding of the critique of practice and be able to challenge models of meaning
• understand aspects of contemporary theory and history of practice as it relates to the course
• have a capacity to establish a practical and intellectual basis for addressing conceptual, perceptual, formal and aesthetic concerns as they relate to fine art practice


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning will take place through a program of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and studio based learning via projects and assignments.

Individual course guides will be distributed by the Lecturer.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be by folio submission at the end of each semester.
Assessment will be conducted by a panel of staff from the course area. The assessment will be reviewed by the course co-ordinator in collaboration with another course co-ordinator.
Assessment feedback will take the form of a written report which will be available to students.
