Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will gain or improve capabilities in:
• Theoretical knowledge: knowledge of network operating systems.
• Technical ability: with its emphasis on problem solving, installing, configuring and managing network operating systems.
• Configuration of network services
• Self discipline through self directed study and communication through working in teams: student capabilities will be improved through presentation of written reports and communicating ideas or information when working in laboratory activities.


On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Prepare to install, upgrade and maintain network operations
• Determine the appropriate operating system to meet customer requirements
• Successfully install, configure, administer, maintain and secure a Linux operating system
• Troubleshoot faults in Linux based networks


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

• Attendance at lectures where course material will be presented and explained, and the course will be illustrated with demonstrations and examples;
• Participate in classroom tutorial activities to consolidate the theory and application of:
• Network services
• Network identification and IP settings
• Server Configuration
• Network Security
• Participate in individual and team problem solving practical scenarios relating to installation, configuration and maintenance of network operating systems
• Completion of tutorial questions and practical laboratory exercises to give further practice in the application of theory and procedures, and to give feedback on your progress and understanding
• Compare different network operating systems and their variants and their suitability for a given application
• Participate in the development of testing procedure to verify reliable system performance, diagnosis of faults in systems and completion of installation and commissioning
• Completion of written quizzes consisting of numerical and other problems requiring an integrated understanding of the course matter; and
• Private study, working through the course as presented in classes and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving conceptual and numerical problems.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Learning Hub and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class. Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided. You will also use laboratory equipment and computer software within the School during project and assignment work.

The assessment for this course comprises weekly evaluation of your understanding of the important concepts, weekly laboratory work to be submitted during the semester and written and practical examinations at the end of the semester.
