Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to an increasingly specialised professional field in the fast developing global translation industry - Translation Project Management - as well as the language services industry in general. It is relevant for translation companies or agencies as well as freelancers. The topics include costing, quotes, preparing for tenders, planning, coordination, resourcing, legal and privacy issues, dispute resolution, quality assurance and use of the latest project management software and tools.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of this course you will be able to:
• Understand the principles of managing translation projects of all sizes and complexity.
• Understand the principles of implementing quality control procedures
• Understand the principles of team work in translation projects
• Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of current information technology tools and software



Overview of Learning Activities

Classes will proceed through set reading of translation project management approaches and case studies of project management issues, providing input into students’ own assessment tasks including the case study analysis report. Some class time will also be devoted to project management software and tools

The course draws on the professional and technical literature on translation project management as well as the professional expertise of staff in their own project management experience in government, institutional or commercial operations


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course has two components:
• Written Assignment
• A Case Study Analysis Report
