Course Description
This course is designed to develop students’ practical listening, speaking and oral reproduction skills, and to introduce the lexicon and phraseology of various professional discourses.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On completing this course you will be able to
• Exhibit effective speaking skills in relation to the production of short oral texts.
• Exhibit effective listening, speaking and oral skills in relation to the comprehension and accurate summarising of texts.
• Exhibit effective listening, speaking and oral skills in relation to the comprehension and accurate reproduction in full of short oral texts.
Overview of Learning Activities
Classes will be student-activity based with individual and group exercises to develop the abovementioned skills. Students will respond to authentic texts taken from various media that may confront interpreters in their professional practice.
Overview of Learning Resources
Classes will use RMIT’s extensive archive of texts both audio and written for oral practice and exercises, as well as new texts taken from various media exhibiting discourse patterns of relevance to interpreters.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment will consist of
• Class tasks identifying discourse features and responding to oral texts
• Class tasks orally reproducing spoken texts
• A final examination
