Course Description

Note: This course is language-specific and will only be offered if sufficient numbers of students share a common target language.
This course introduces students to the varieties of genres and texts dealt with by professional translators. It focuses on the components of accuracy of appropriateness in transferring meanings, and explores linguistic, contextual and cultural factors that create difficulties for translators.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completing this course you will
• Be able to identify and comment on the variety of issues presented by different text types in translation
• Demonstrate an ability to appropriately translate basic texts from a variety of genres and text types



Overview of Learning Activities

Classes will discuss, translate and review texts from a variety of sources and on a variety of topics, from literary to informative to technical translation contexts. Target audience and intentions of translations will be considered. Procedural issues of checking, quality control and preparing for different media publication will also be covered as appropriate.


Overview of Learning Resources

Materials for discussion and translation will be sourced from RMIT’s extensive archive of text types and paradigmatic texts, as well as from contemporary an diverse publications and media.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment will consist of class and home translations, and a final examination.
