Option course. Cannot be taken in the same semester as Translation Accrediting Practice 2. No prerequisite.

Course Description

Note: This course is language-specific and will only be offered if sufficient numbers of students share a common target language. Generally for each student group either Translating or Interpreting will be offered.
This course responds to student interest in developing particular aspects of their professional practice in Translating or Interpreting, focussing on practice at an advanced professional level. In Translating the focus will be on advanced texts of a technical, legal or literary nature. In Interpreting the focus will be on simultaneous interpreting or advanced consecutive interpreting.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completing this course you will:
• (In Translating) Demonstrate competence in handling advanced translation texts and appropriately commenting on the issues and difficulties raised in them
• (In Interpreting) Demonstrate competence in handling advanced Interpreting techniques for a variety of professional Interpreting situations.

Overview of Learning Activities

In this tailor-made course learning activities will focus on the professional demands made of T&I practitioners facing more advanced texts of interpreting situations, relevant to the particular languages and situation of the class. This could related for example to issue of teamwork in running a large translation project, or dealing with features of more technical translation texts or the nature of preparation needed for a specific conference interpreting task.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT draws on a large archive of written texts and oral dialogues and speeches for teaching materials, much of which has been digitalised and is available to students for preparation and class tasks.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will consist of
• Class exercises and home translations (Translating)
• Class exercises and recorded interpreting practice (Interpreting)
• (For both Translating & Interpreting) A final examination
