Course Description

This course develops your understanding of the construction industry and introduces you to how diverse trades that contribute to a residential and/or commercial construction project function. The course focuses on developing your knowledge of construction skills as applied across diverse industry trades such as: carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, electrics and plumbing. Working in a team environment you will engage in the process of setting out and levelling a site within Melbourne. You will develop your knowledge of construction Health and Safety regulations, which includes examination of various elements of the Health and Safety codes of practice and legislation. This course will enable you to engage in a range of practical workshops and activities designed to develop and enhance your understanding of construction site management practice in the residential and commercial construction sectors.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of the construction trades and work processes to review the construction practices of a residential and/or commercial project.
  2. Critically appraise the state and the condition of site progress on a residential and/or commercial construction project.
  3. Apply knowledge of construction Health and Safety regulations to determine the level of safety for a residential and/or commercial project.
     


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities in this course are designed to enable you to apply your developing knowledge and skills and include workshops, practical study and site visits.

You will be engaged in face to face one week intensive 5 full-day study period. You will be guided in your learning through classes, workshops and construction site visits with academics and industry representatives

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

While on tour you can expect to access lectures at industry sites, tours of construction sites and presentations from industry.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of: 

Assessment Task 1: Individual work: A critical review of skill-based work processes in construction projects and key management functions of construction in relation to structures in the residential sector. 50% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 

Assessment Task 2A: Construction Practical. This task requires all groups to complete the construction practical on the nominated day, corresponding work activity sheet and completion (i.e review/signoff/collation) of relevant SWMS for the workshop activity. 20% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 

Assessment Task 2B: Site Surveying Practical. This task requires all groups to complete the surveying practical on the nominated day, corresponding work activity sheet (both group and Q&A format) and completion (i.e review/signoff/collation) of relevant SWMS for the workshop activity. 20% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 

Assessment Task 2C: Site Visit. Students are required to submit a Photographic Journal and Written Reflection of the site visit.  10% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3
