Course Description
Health Issues and Promotion in the Community is a one-semester course that aims to develop knowledge and understanding of health issues and use multi-disciplinary approaches to promote health. It conceptualises the importance of promoting physical activity as a key strategy as this behaviour impacts on many of today’s health issues. Individual and population approaches that will be discussed include, using mass-media, social-marketing, sponsorship, policy and environmental influences in a range of community settings such as workplaces, schools and homes. In addition, the course will also provide students with an understanding of the processes of conceptualising and evaluating health promotion initiatives using evidence-based resources.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will contribute to your development of a range of Victorian Institute of Teaching and Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership National Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL).
This course contributes to the development of the following Health & Physical Education Program Learning Outcomes:
• Develop content knowledge and how to teach it (PLO 2).
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Identify current health issues and analyse approaches to health and disease prevention.
2. Identify and discuss health dimensions and community views towards health in Australia.
3. Discuss the importance of promoting physical activity as a key strategy to improve health outcomes.
4. Apply health promotion approaches in a variety of settings
5. Critically evaluate current health promotion strategies to determine their methodology and level of success.
6. Use evidence-based resources to inform health promotion strategies
7. Plan a health promotion initiative implementing appropriate strategies and models that aims to address a current health issue in a school, home, community or industry setting.
Overview of Learning Activities
Concepts related to Health Issues and Promotion in the Community will be delivered in the lectures and the tutorial groups. Directed readings and class activities will be discussed in tutorials to consolidate understanding in an evidence based approach. Assessment tasks ensure both independent and collaborative student learning capacities. The examination will consolidate your knowledge, understanding and application of concepts from the semester.
Overview of Learning Resources
Learning resources in this course include class readings, lecture notes (including Powerpoint presentations), practical exercises, research, handouts and references on selected topics. It will be to your advantage to access and review lecture notes prior to class. These should not be viewed as a complete set of lecture note materials.
Sessions will be a mix of discussion/tutorial/group work/ presentations and lectures. You will be asked to lead discussions where appropriate. Although some textbooks are recommended, you are encouraged to utilise databases and video recordings used in class. Thus, resources of knowledge will come from within the group and, more formally, outside group activity.
Overview of Assessment
To pass this course, you must satisfactorily complete each assessment component and obtain an overall mark of 50% or more.
