Course Description

This is a core course that focuses on the place of health education in the primary school curriculum. This course covers health issues such as grief, mental health, sexuality and nutrition. Promoting Health Education will concentrate on the planning of health education, curriculum design, approaches to teaching health, health resources and organisations, and educational policies that impact on health education. Broader issues such as the social and cultural aspects of health education, discomfort, controversy and educational theory will also be introduced.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to assist students to:
• Critically evaluate, design and develop health pedagogy using current educational theory, educational initiatives and current curriculum frameworks.
• Understand the links between the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching health education.
• Develop an understanding of the discipline of health and student wellbeing.
 


Upon completion of this course student will be able to:
• Develop a health pedagogy that is informed by educational theory and curriculum practices.
• Participate in the teaching of a health curriculum.
• Select and use a range of effective teaching and learning strategies to enhance the teaching of health education.
• Demonstrate the ability to work as part of team and form professional working relationships.
• Explain their understandings of health education in ways that incorporate and consolidates theory from the course.

At the conclusion of this course, students will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following ICT capabilities:
• Understanding the role of ICT in society and the implications for education.
• Understandings of the social and ethical considerations in using ICT safely and responsibly in the classroom.

• Examining a range of health issues and the application of these topics in a primary classroom setting.

• Participating in discussions on health education and its relationship to contemporary social and cultural issues.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks are directly linked to the stated objectives and outcomes. Assessment in the course will be both theoretical and practical in nature. A range of formative and summative assessment types will be incorporated into the course (for example, developing a Professional Portfolio and a variety of assessment that demonstrates how the specific areas of professional practice have been addressed).
