Course Description

This is an elective course that focuses on aspects of coaching primary school children in Physical Education and sports programs. In particular, it examines the fundamental psycho-sociological and developmental issues encountered and inherent in coaching. The course is designed for students to participate in, analyse and report on coaching experiences, using the concepts and understandings presented in lectures, current literature, field practice and observation. Students will identify what is effective and successful coaching for students in diverse physical activity and sports settings, including coping with a range of positive or negative behaviours demonstrated by participants.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to assist students to:
• Know and understand fundamental principles of psychology applied to coaching children in sport contexts.
• Develop their philosophy and values associated with coaching children in sport.
• Apply with insight the concepts encountered in the lectures and the literature to real-world coaching contexts.
• Apply basic concepts and skills through the two practical formal coaching course components and, ultimately, their teaching and coaching.
• Express the importance of children’s active participation in healthy physical activity and sport.
• Select and apply suitable resources.


Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
• Articulate and defend a philosophy towards the teaching of Physical Education.
• Understand and apply foundational principles of sports psychology.
• Demonstrate successful coaching and performance skills.
• Apply health, fitness and safety values to practice.
• Understand students’ growth and developmental needs and their application to sports coaching.
• Demonstrate successful communication and recording skills and methods.
• Access, review and apply appropriate literature, human and other resources for program development, support and implementation.

• Awareness of digital assessment and reporting tools for effective learning.

Overview of Learning Activities

Students’ learning in this course will involve a range of activities including lectures, workshops literature searches and annotations, on-site practical observation, observations and research. This course will also involve participation in and the award of various coaching accreditation certificates at the personal expense of the student.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks are directly linked to the stated objectives and outcomes. Assessment in the course will be both theoretical and practical in nature. A range of formative and summative assessment types will be incorporated into the course (for example, journal writing, examination, written, oral or performance based assessment).
