Course Description

This course is one of a sequence of professional experience courses designed to develop your teaching practice. This course will prepare you to work with young children birth – 2 years in formal early childhood settings. You will gain skills in documenting and planning for infants and toddlers, become familiar with the theoretical literature, reflect on diversity, individual difference and the range of contexts families live in. The changing social image of infants and toddlers will be explored in relation to changing expectations of children’s competency and the provision of stimulating environments. The impact of the ‘brain research’ on the study of children in the first two years will be discussed and the relevance of curriculum frameworks for very young children will be explored.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the development of children between the ages of birth to two 
  • Collaborate with children and their families
  • Design a plan based on an understanding of children’s competence in the first two years
  • Provide weekly and daily planning, implement and evaluate experiences for infants and toddlers that promote the well-being
  • Implement a play curriculum in the first two years

  • Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice. 
  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning. 


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
