This course is only available to Honours students who have met the selection criteria for BH058P12 Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Honours).

Course Description

 

In this course you will write a review of the published scientific literature that forms the background to your research project. You will critically evaluate specialist literature and develop your ability to compare and contrast scientific studies.  You will advance your understanding of research methods and reflect on the significance of the data presented.  You will identify scientific knowledge gaps and begin to develop research hypotheses related to your research project.

 

Supervisors will mentor you to critically assess the significance, quality and relevance of published work in the field and will provide editorial support.

 

Workshops on scientific writing skills will provide you with independent review of you written work and the opportunity to identify strengths and areas that could be improved

On completion of this course you should be able to:

CLO1. Scope and gather the relevant scientific literature in a given project area.

CLO2. Identify and critically evaluate the source and relevance of published literature in databases.

CLO3. Organise and integrate relevant scientific knowledge into a coherent and logical evaluation.

CLO4. Write a literature review using accepted scientific writing practices.

CLO5. Reference published scientific literature according to recognised academic protocols.

CLO6. Demonstrate a greater depth of knowledge in your major study discipline.

Overview of Learning Activities

Workshops covering bibliography referencing, the use of online reference search engines and databases, and scientific writing are designed to develop your practical skills to use in self-directed review of the literature for written presentation. Discussion with supervisors will allow you to develop a comprehension of the significance of the literature in regard to your research project.

Formal workshops (4h), independent study as required, supervisor mentoring and editorial support, face-to-face or written, as required for two drafts of the literature review.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT library online reference collection, hardcopy journals, e-journal and document delivery services. Collaborative links between RMIT project supervisors and researcher at institutions within Australia and Overseas. Your supervisor will provide feedback on the planning and drafting of your proposed literature review.

Assessment Task:  A written literature review Weighting 100% You will submit a literature review for assessment by RMIT academic staff that will be graded according to content, organisation, presentation and references. Requirements and marking criteria will be available to students via myRMIT. Supervisor editorial comment is limited to two (2) drafts. This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. This task is part of the research component of BH058P12.
