This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.


Course Description

This course enables you to think strategically about the successful planning and management of projects in career development. During the course you are actively involved in acquiring knowledge and skills in project management through the development, organisation and leadership of a project in a career development setting of your choice. You will develop insight into principles and issues associated with project management and an understanding of specific project management processes, strategies and techniques relevant to career development.

Upon successful completion of this course you can expect to be able to:


• Investigate, conceptualise, design and initiate projects in career development that meet the strategic needs of an organisation or practice
• Establish and foster strong lines of communication and consultation with key stakeholders in career development
• Devise, monitor and manage project plans in career development.
• Monitor, evaluate and report on project budget
• Analyse, determine and manage project risks
• Manage and lead project team members
• Reflect upon and appraise project management skills and outcomes.

Overview of Learning Activities

Course materials and self paced learning experiences are designed to have you think strategically about projects and introduce you to project management principles. In keeping with the competency focus of the profession and this program, learning activities will be linked to your own personal and professional practice with the intention of producing capable practitioners. You will develop, apply, review and refine your strategic management skills via learning activities involving:


• Knowledge – reading and exercises designed to give you an understanding of how career development projects are managed including strategic planning, the project life cycle and successful implementation factors
• Resources – activities designed to introduce you to the way in which strategic planning and project management methods, techniques and tools, e.g., project scaffolding and mapping instruments, can be applied in career development.
• Relationships – activities such as peer review designed to foster the variety of relationships involved in successful project management in career development.
• Practice - activities such as review and reflection designed to analyse and refine your skills and application of project management processes, methods, tools and techniques.

As an online education course, materials are delivered through myRMITStudies, the university’s Distributed Learning System.   Learning resources are comprehensive – no additional texts or materials are required beyond those supplied in the online curriculum.


Overview of Assessment

Your ability to clearly describe and apply key concepts and skills in project management will be assessed via a number of written assessment tasks.  A suggested timetable for assignment submission is provided but dates are open to negotiation within semester of enrolment.
