You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite course
BUIL1226 Introduction to Buildings
before you commence this course.
OR
Alternatively you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course. Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning. Further information: http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=x94or0ccuu7k
Course Description
This course is designed to develop the techniques required to measure, quantify and cost construction work. You will be introduced to the measurement rules as stipulated in the Standard Methods of Measurement. Furthermore, you will develop your understanding of the tender documentation. This course will develop your ability to utilise techniques to measure, quantify and cost construction work.
This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. Input and guidance from representatives from industry will provide feedback on your use of estimating techniques.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

- PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- CLO1: Measure quantities of simple structures in accordance with the Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works;
- CLO2: Apply commercially available software to produce Bills & Quantities;
- CLO3: Compute all-in unit rates applicable to different elements in simple building structures.
Overview of Learning Activities
Face-to face workshops provide the key concepts for this course. Hands-on measurement worked examples will be provided during the lecture. Practical tasks and concept tests will be given in order to enhance students’ engagement in the tutorials.
Overview of Learning Resources

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of:
City Campus
- Quizzes 30%, CLOs 1,2,3
- Measurement of substructure and superstructure 40%, CLOs 1,2
- Measurement of Finishes 30%, CLOs 1,2
Hong Kong Campus
- Measurement of Sub-Structure 20%, CLOs 1
- Measurement of Super-Structure 30%, CLOs 1,2
- Quiz/test 20%, CLOs 1,2,3
- Measurement of Finishes 30%, CLOs 1,2
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
