Course Description
This course will introduce you to the key aspects of management theory in the organisational environment. Specifically, the course will focus on:
• Fundamentals of management theory
• Organisational environment, including legislative, trade union, economic and social influences
• General management and its influences on the management of projects
• Organisational structures, culture, politics & power; organisational behaviour
• Organisational goal-setting: vision, strategy & decision-making
• Change management in organisations
Extensive use will be made of case studies and organisational situations that are relevant to projects.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex project management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
- PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse project management stakeholders
- PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
- PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
- PLO6: Critically examine and reflect on the profession, in local and/or global contexts, and question accepted interpretations and decision making
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- CLO1: Apply management concepts and terms related to organisation processes to manage successful projects
- CLO2: Critically examine and determine key attributes of organisational environments, culture, structure and politics
- CLO3: Describe how general management may have an influence on management of projects
- CLO4: Determine alternative structures for placing projects within an organisation or a network of organisations.
- CLO5: Select appropriate models and strategies for managing project—related change and communicate these effectively.
Overview of Learning Activities
A combination of Lectures and Tutorials. Lectures will provide theoratical background and knowledge for a certain management concept and in tutorials students will be able to apply the concepts learned to various case studies.

All lecture material and tutorial solutions will be made available on the DLS at the appropriate times during the course. This course requires that you have the prescribed textbook, which contains all the necessary material to pass this course.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Task 1:
9 in-class tasks will be completed, including case studies and 1 multiple choice test. Individual. 60%

Task 2:
Group presentation, poster and report. Presentations will occur during weeks 11 and 12. Group. 40%
