Course Description

This course provides an overview of yoga as it was originally taught in the pre-industrial East and how yoga can be adapted to a modern Western context.

Topic areas include:

  • the history and philosophy of yoga
  • basic functional anatomy and physiology from both Eastern and Western perspectives
  • the essence of the main types of yoga (traditional and modern styles)
  • theory and practice of traditional yoga techniques
  • a simple hour long yoga sequence practice
  • the principles, theory and practice of being your own yoga teacher.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is a University student elective course to undergraduate students from various disciplines.


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  • CLO 1. Outline key aspects of the history of yoga
  • CLO 2. Identify key  anatomical structures in the human body (nine (9) main joint complexes, twenty (20) opposing muscle group pairs, and three (3)  spinal nerve reflexes) and explain the function of the autonomic nervous system and circulatory system
  • CLO 3. Plan a simple yoga sequence practice (as appropriate for your body) consisting of simple yoga asanas (postures), vinyasas (moving exercises), pranayamas (breath-control exercises), dhyana (meditation) and yoga nidra (relaxation)
  • CLO 4. Describe the basic principles, theory and practice of being your own yoga teacher
  • CLO 5. Analyse your yoga practice using self-assessment strategies
  • CLO 6. Describe safety issues that need to addressed when practising the Yoga Fundamentals sequence.


Overview of Learning Activities

Online lessons are delivered through myRMIT Studies where syllabus material will be presented, explained and discussed. 

Learning activities include independent study and activities in addition to working through the course materials as presented via the online learning platform.  Other activities include:

  • Online discussion groups and peer-reviewed online group activities and tasks
  • Develop, critique and improve your own yoga practice
  • Application of safety criteria to yoga practice.

Assessment for this course includes completion of practical exercises with written feedback in discussion forums, participation in directed online discussions, and multiple choice online tests. 

To help you meet the assessment requirements, interactive online activities and discussions will provide opportunities for self-assessment and feedback from staff and/or other students.

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials including Powerpoint presentations and videos through myRMIT/ Canvas. Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided. Weblinks are provided throughout the Learning Package so that you can directly access the reading.

Assessment 1: Mid Semester and End of Semester Online tests 

Weighting: 10% - Mid semester multiple choice, 10% - End of semester multiple choice
