Course Description

The course will examine a number of approaches to leadership and change management in organisations, encouraging you to critically evaluate the theories and models presented. The course is designed to enable you to apply your academic learning to contemporary workplace situations.

It will develop your ability to analyse, and comprehend, both planned and unplanned change and other situations that impact on the leadership of an organisation. The course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to lead and manage transitions; and the psychological, structural and cultural issues leaders face when dealing with change.

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onwards your teacher will advise you if you require access to a computer for the course. It is recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus outside class times.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will help you to develop your ability to:

On completion of this course you will be able to:
 

  • Critically evaluate and explain the relevance of a range of Leadership and Change Management concepts and approaches to a variety of organisational situations; 
  • Identify, and knowledgably discuss, current and controversial issues in leadership and change management; 
  • Apply knowledge and learning to contemporary workplace situations, especially through the use of diagnostic tools and models to explore underlying organizational and behavioural issues that may affect the leadership role and organisational change processes; 
  • Articulate and demonstrate understanding of the management competencies needed in Leadership and Change Management; 
  • Understand the impact of your personal development through self-improvement and self-assessment in the areas of leadership and change management.


Overview of Learning Activities

The course may comprise:

Lectures; group discussions and debates; group and individual research and presentations; in-class and online activities and experiential exercises; guided reading; feedback opportunities on, and self-assessment of, leadership and change agency competencies and skills.
 
You may work both individually, and in groups, and may make class-room presentations.


Overview of Learning Resources

In addition to a textbook or equivalent, you will have access to online materials on MyRMIT and additional information from the RMIT Library. You will be required to read widely from references provided and undertake your own research via the library data bases.
Supporting information, documents and resource materials may be distributed in class over the course of the semester as required.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course is concerned with your ability to synthesise and present knowledge on the meaning, and competencies, of leading and managing change; to increase self knowledge; and to develop strategies to improve your own leadership competencies. This will occur through written work and/or oral presentation.

Assessment may be based on a combination of group and individual assessments.
