Course Description

This course is where it all begins in Entrepreneurship training: it focuses on developing an entrepreneurial mindset and understanding the underlying concepts and principles that explain entrepreneurship. You will learn that an entrepreneurial edge can be developed in individuals. You will also learn that entrepreneurship involves developing “living” businesses, where all aspects of the business need to be developed simultaneously to achieve the desired goals.

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onwards your teacher will advise you if you require access to a computer for the course. It is recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus outside class times.


 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will help you to develop your ability to:

  •  The core concepts underpinning entrepreneurship 
  •  The criteria used to evaluate a businesses potential 
  •  The different types of risks entrepreneurs face 
  •  The critical aspects of creating a new venture and their inter-relatedness 
  •  The forces in the regulatory, industry and community environment 
  •  The elements of a business plan 
  •  Ethics and the nature of social entrepreneurship 
  •  Research from a commonsense perspective and 
  •  The importance of effective communication.

You will explore theories and concepts associated with the defined learning outcomes and the practical application of these theories and concepts via learning modes such as formal lectures, guest lectures and tutorials involving case studies, class discussions, research and presentations.
