Course Description

In this course you will develop your conceptual and practical knowledge of leadership as this applies to the field of project management. The objectives of this course are to provide you with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to work effectively as part of a project team, to develop your capacity to collaborate with your peers in order to successfully meet established project deliverables and to develop as an effective leader. You will also build your knowledge on the different styles of leadership and how they can be used to deliver successful projects and understand the role diverse stakeholder management and engagement plays in achieving effective project management.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex project management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
  • PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse project management stakeholders
  • PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
  • PLO4: Utilise appropriate methods and techniques to design and /or execute research based or professionally focused project management projects, demonstrating capacity for independent and collaborative learning, addressing real world industry issues
  • PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
  • PLO6: Critically examine and reflect on the profession, in local and/or global contexts, and question accepted interpretations and decision making


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. CLO1: Identify how leadership principles and practices: contribute to project outcomes; and determine project success in both local and global contexts
  2. CLO2: Collaborate and apply theoretical knowledge of leadership and teamwork,and critical reflective thinking, to project management contexts and scenarios
  3. CLO3: Analyse the principles of team dynamics and identify the role these principles play in project success
  4. CLO4: Discuss the role leadership plays in shaping organisational cultures
  5. CLO5: Critically reflect on the effectiveness of leadership decision making


Overview of Learning Activities

You will learn through series of lectures and workshops. Learning activities in this course will include case study exercises, class discussions and group work. Key concepts and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures and workshops with opportunities to discuss their use in case studies during workshops. Active and constructive participation in group discussions is expected in addition to wider reading and careful planning for assessment tasks.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

You will be provided with lecture notes, workshop material, reading lists and case study material. You will be expected to utilise library and electronic resources (as well as any other appropriate resources) to engage in professional reading of relevant project management literature, including leadership in project management.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment consists of:

Task 1: Individual essay. 30%. Week 7. CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Task 2: Group project and presentation.  40%. Week 12. CLOs 1, 2, 5

Task 3: Reflective journal 30% total. Part A post mid-semester break and Final Week 13. CLOs 1, 2, 4, 5


Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
