Course Description

This course builds on your learning in Structures and Materials 1, and focuses on the composition and use of concrete and composite material design within high rise construction. The objectives of this course are to: develop your knowledge and understanding of: basic design principles which apply to the use of concrete and composite materials; develop your understanding of key construction techniques which apply to high rise construction, including basement construction techniques and develop your understanding and ability to utilise construction technologies and materials applicable to the construction of a high rise building.

  • Concrete technology

  • PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse construction management stakeholders
  • PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
  • PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • CLO1: Analyse and apply construction technologies used in commercial construction, both local and global
  • CLO2: Select and justify the use of construction technologies appropriate to diverse construction sites
  • CLO3: Evaluate different technologies used in high rise construction
  • CLO4: Determine and justify the optimal construction technologies for use in the different stages of construction

Your learning in this course will be developed through a variety of classroom activities that will include face to face lectures, workshops, and a site visit to a highrise construction project.
