Course Description

The course is designed to enable students to reflect and develop knowledge and skills to successfully apply for their co-op placement position (and later career position)


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Learning Objectives

On completion of the WIL/Co-op course students will have established an e-portfolio that will consist of:
1. Long term goals and action steps to achieve goals;
2. Learning style inventory;
3. Knowledge, skills and abilities to audit with a focus on graduate capabilities;
4. Professional development plan to address gaps;
5. Development and articulation of employability skills;
6. Resume and customised cover letter addressing key selection criteria in job advertisements;
7. Behavioural interview techniques;
8. Assessment centre skills; and
9. Co-op placement strategy.

 


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the students should demonstrate the ability to:
1. Effectively conduct small-scale research using a variety of methods to solve practical problems at work;
2. Work effectively in teams as well as individually;
Become an effective team leader;
3. Prepare and present material orally and actively participate in work group meetings;
4. Compile reports and develop coherent and well written documents for managers; and
5. Develop and finish work assignment in a timely manner.


Overview of Learning Activities

1. To learn more about self and produce a good resume.
2. To learn how to make up a good covering letter for an application.
3. To construct a series of answers to common interview questions.
4. To do a mock interview.
5. To learn about the profession and what it means to be a professional.

Students will have access to online course materials on the Learning Hub and additional online information from RMIT Library, Career Development and Education and Learning Skills Unit.


Overview of Assessment

Completion of career preparation projects which may include:
1. Written exercises and projects;
2. Oral presentations; and
3. Simulated demonstrations.
