Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to the principles underpinning health information systems as the foundations of managing and interpreting health information. You will examine electronic and traditional systems for capturing health information on individual patients in hospitals, and a range of health care settings. The role of health information management professionals in planning, developing and identifying current and future information needs will be examined.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for Associate Degree in Health Sciences:

2. analyse and interpret information to determine appropriate solutions to predictable and unpredictable situations

  1. Describe the principles of electronic health records and personal health records
  2. Use a client and provider identify management system
  3. Use a health record collection storage and retrieval process - manual or electronic
  4. Identify common roles and functions required of health information management professionals in Australian Healthcare
  5. Develop and apply processes, policies and procedures to ensure complete clinical and administrative clinical documentation in the health record
  6. Develop and maintain a budget for the information management service
  7. Describe the fiscal impact of DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) allocation and clinical coding outputs
  8. Abstract relevant clinical information from a range of moderately complex medical records by applying your knowledge of health record structure, principles, the language of clinical practice and simple diseases/conditions/diagnoses and medical treatments in moderately complex cases where there are multiple codes and concepts to be allocated or where moderately complex clinical concepts and coding rules apply. 
  9. Accurately interpret and apply the Australian National Coding Standards to clinical data from a range of medical reports and records found in moderately complex medical record cases to completely represent data for morbidity reporting

 


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Face to face teaching: to obtain an understanding of basic concepts that are required to undertake further study
• Personal reading (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and online materials): to reinforce/strengthen your understanding of the coding conventions, standards and practices.
• Undertake classification and coding for a range of medical records, using a computerised coding system in a simulated work environment
• Participate in tutorials to explore solutions to coding issues.

• Clinical coding on-line text ICD-10 – AM and ACHI text.
