Course Description
In this course you will explore and test the application of decoration. Through investigation and analysis of decoration you will specify appropriate decorative solutions to meet a client brief. Your technical and creative thinking skills will enable you to document and recommend selections clearly and coherently.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:
- Engage with contemporary trends in the interior decoration & design industry to investigate related emerging manufacturing, materials and technologies.
- Investigate and adapt knowledge of design history, theory and culture to contemporary Interior Decoration and Design context and practice.
- Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fit out to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Identify, analyse and apply decoration to convey your concept/s.
- Seek and evaluate feedback on your work and apply where appropriate to meet the client brief and industry standards.
- Apply decorative theories to develop design proposals.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include supervised project work, independent investigation, peer feedback, reflection, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work, guest presenter demonstrations

Library references, architectural and interior decoration and design websites, international interior design and decoration papers and magazines, gallery and museum sites and the blackboard (myRMIT) interface for support material
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet course learning outcomes and on your development against program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, portfolio, reports and individual/group projects. Feedback will be given progressively throughout the course and on all assessment tasks.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Assessment Task 1 Colour, Light, Decoration (20%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
- Identify, analyse and apply decoration to convey your concept/s.
Assessment Task 2 Decoration Journal (40%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
- Identify, analyse and apply decoration to convey your concept/s.
- Seek and evaluate feedback on your work and apply where appropriate to meet the client brief and industry standards.
Assessment Task 3 Decoration Proposal (40%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
- Identify, analyse and apply decoration to convey your concept/s.
- Seek and evaluate feedback on your work and apply where appropriate to meet the client brief and industry standards.
- Apply decorative theories to develop design proposals.
