Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite courses ARCH1375 Decoration Design Studio 1 and ARCH1379 Decoration Design Studio 2 before you commence this course.

You should also undertake ARCH1389 Decoration Design Studio 4 at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.  These are co-requisite courses.

Note it is a condition of enrolment at RMIT that you accept responsibility for ensuring that you have completed the prerequisite/s and agree to concurrently enrol in co-requisite courses before enrolling in a course.  For further information refer to the RMIT Course Requisites Policy.


Course Description

This course is taken in the final semester of the Associate Degree and involves a major project. The project will allow you to develop, manage and achieve holistically the objectives of a design project. This capstone will meaningfully build on prior experiences and capacities while also developing critical skills in evaluation of learning needs for a given scenario. The project work will be the focus in both this course and Decoration Design Studio 4.

 

You will develop your skills and provide experience in the development and resolution of creative design solutions for complex client briefs. The client brief will be explored and resolved in Decoration and Design Studio 4. The focus is to develop a critical approach to a design solution, drawing on influences of design history, theory and practice. You will be required to synthesise and contextualise your ideas through a process of iteration and develop a design viewpoint to apply to a project brief. 

You will explore the relationship between the client and the designer to determine clear objectives and approaches to the design brief. The context and site will inform the foundations for the development of your designs

You will explore and investigate a range of materials and finishes, furniture, fittings and fixtures, with the specification and application of these in Decoration Design Studio 4.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Investigate and adapt knowledge of design history, theory and culture to contemporary Interior Decoration and Design context and practice.
  • Create design solutions to meet the needs of the client and address all industry conventions in both manual and digital formats in response to a design brief.
  • Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fit out to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
  • Apply initiative to work both independently and collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for own learning and work.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Develop a critical approach to a design solution, Documenting and developing a design process in relation to a specific project brief.
  • Demonstrate a method of inquiry in relation to the design process
  • Effectively engage and demonstrate skill in the use of presentation techniques and digital technologies.
  • Effectively communicate ideas of design process through both 2D and 3D media.
  • Work collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for own learning and work
  • Respond to a brief providing creative design solutions to meet the needs of the client.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include supervised project work, independent research, peer feedback, reflection, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work and guest presenter demonstrations.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Audio visual presentations, library references, architectural and interior design websites, interface & activity via MyRMIT learning and support material.
 


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, portfolio, models, presentations and projects.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.

Assessment Task 1 Precedent Study (40%)

  • Develop a critical approach to a design solution, Documenting and developing a design process in relation to a specific project brief.
  • Effectively engage and demonstrate skill in the use of presentation techniques and digital technologies.
  • Apply initiative to work both independently and collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for own learning and work.


Assessment Task 2
Design Process (40%)

  • Demonstrate a method of inquiry in relation to the design process
  • Effectively engage and demonstrate skill in the use of presentation techniques and digital technologies.
  • Effectively communicate ideas of design process through both 2D and 3D media.
  • Respond to a brief providing creative design solutions to meet the needs of the client.


Assessment Task 3 Emerging as a designer
(20%)

  • Develop a critical approach to a design solution, Documenting and developing a design process in relation to a specific project brief.
  • Demonstrate a method of inquiry in relation to the design process
  • Effectively engage and demonstrate skill in the use of presentation techniques and digital technologies.
