Course Description

In this course the focus is on experimental and experiential design for decoration outcomes. You will investigate potential directions for temporary spaces within a sustainable framework using design processes that encourage innovative creation of spaces. Creative uses of new materials and lighting techniques, you will plan and develop solutions for new and existing interior spaces. You may work directly into exhibition, residential or public spaces to manifest your design.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:

  • Work with industry to develop and promote a globally sustainable practice of good design and decoration with a focus to the future.
  • Engage with contemporary trends in the interior design industry and investigate related emerging and evolving manufacturing technologies and materials.
  • Create design solutions to meet the needs of the client and address all industry conventions in both manual and digital formats in response to a design brief.
  • Apply initiative to work both independently and collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for own learning and work.



Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Investigate, analyse, and interpret a broad range of sources of temporary design solutions.
  • Creatively and critically develop and apply design, manufacture and installation practices to create sustainable interior spaces.
  • Seek and evaluate feedback on your innovative interior proposals through display and discussion with peers and with industry.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include supervised project work, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, independent research, discussion, project work, peer feedback, reflection and excursions / site visits.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, reports, models and individual / group projects.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.

Assessment Task 1 Temporary Interiors Exploration (20%)

  • Investigate, analyse, and interpret a broad range of sources of temporary design solutions.


Assessment Task 2 Design Development (40%)

  • Investigate, analyse, and interpret a broad range of sources of temporary design solutions.
  • Creatively and critically develop and apply design, manufacture and installation practices to create sustainable interior spaces.
  • Seek and evaluate feedback on your innovative interior proposals through display and discussion with peers and with industry.
     

Assessment Task 3 Community Space (40%)

  • Investigate, analyse, and interpret a broad range of sources of temporary design solutions.
  • Creatively and critically develop and apply design, manufacture and installation practices to create sustainable interior spaces.
  • Seek and evaluate feedback on your innovative interior proposals through display and discussion with peers and with industry.
