Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite courses GRAP2559 Textile Design Studio – Body and GRAP2560 Textile Design Studio - Space before you commence this course. 

Note it is a condition of enrolment at RMIT that you accept responsibility for ensuring that you have completed the prerequisite/s and agree to concurrently enrol in co-requisite courses before enrolling in a course.  For further information refer to the RMIT Course Requisites Policy.


Course Description

This course will provide you with the opportunity to deepen and apply your knowledge and skills related to the creation of original textile design concepts. You will manage your own learning, problem solving and decision making through a practice-based or led design project. 

You will consolidate and extend your knowledge and application of related textile design principles, materials, techniques and processes. The outcomes of the course will contribute to your personal Portfolio to enable you to showcase your textile design specialisation to future employers.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

  • Examine, analyse and evaluate theoretical and practical principles, emerging trends and issues pertinent to textile design and related industries
  • Investigate, synthesis and apply principles of textile design, technologies, materials and processes to create original textile based concepts and outcomes
  • Demonstrate creative and technical skills, critical thinking when identifying, and problem solving for textile, fashion and other design contexts
  • Communicate and present design concepts using a range of formats and strategies in a clear and coherent manner to diverse audiences
  • Examine, evaluate and apply technologies associated with textile design and manufacturing in both local and global contexts
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in your practice or future study


 Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Research, analysis and develop a concept applicable to textile design development
  • Demonstrate your inventiveness (creativity and innovation) to develop an original design concept
  • Undertake practical design and technical skills with specific emphasis on materiality and your chosen textile speciality
  • Communicate and present across a range of media
  • Demonstrate professional practice applicable to textile design


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will take a blended approach in its delivery. Key concepts and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures / demonstrations / hands on workshops, class based activities or online notes / tutorials.  There will be opportunities to discuss the brief and requirements during individual and group tutorials.

You will be required to work independently and unsupervised in non-contact time in order to consolidate and further develop the concepts presented in class.
 


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.   The University Library has extensive resources for textile design students.  The Library has produced a subject guide that includes quality online and print resources for your studies Library Guides The Library provides guides on academic referencing: Referencing and subject specialist help via your Liaison Librarian.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

This course has been developed in reference to the BATD assessment guide available through BP121 Mystudies – Canvas.   Please refer to the guide in order to familiarise yourself with program assessment methods. At the beginning of each project you will receive a copy of the: brief, teaching schedule and assessment rubric. The rubric should be consulted regularly, as it allows you to self assess and manage your progress. It will be used by your course lecturer/s to assess your project work upon completion.  

Assessment will consist of one project, consisting of two phases: (1) Research, play & creative risk taking + (2) Reflect, resolve & materialise. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks, project milestones and during group and individual tutorials.
