Course Description

This course couples design theory and Lean process techniques to develop a range of visual planning and monitoring tools. A selection of software will be used to develop analytical visuals including, but not exclusive of, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Visio and MS Project.
Lean process techniques will be used to analyse the current and future state of a production sequence. This will be explored in relation to a range of business scenarios including manufacturing, logistics, marketing and education. Design skills and lean process methods will then be used to create and map solutions that can be displayed, comprehended and applied visually.
The content covered includes the application of current state mapping, standardised work tools, problem solving and measurement. You will also visit an exemplar Lean or design organisation to view innovation and change processes directly.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Apply key theories of Visual Management processes and use in contemporary organisations.
  2. Apply initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving, and decision making in visual management processes and practices which can facilitate achievement of organisational objectives.
  3. Critically analyse and evaluate theories and models to guide decision-making and present solutions in a visual management format.
  4. Communicate ideas and Visual Management solutions using language appropriate to the audience.
  5. Use reflective techniques to improve future practice and use of visual management tools.


Overview of Learning Activities

To successfully complete this course you will need to participate in lectures and classwork activities. You will need to complete regular weekly learning tasks that may involve online activities, reading broadly, analysing video material and case studies, reporting critically on set questions, researching course topics, and completing prescribed assessment tasks. You are required to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your teacher and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies/Canvas Course Site. You will also be required to actively and effectively engage with peers in collaborative problem solving activities and other forms of group work.

The learning activities for this unit have been designed to your creative and critical awareness introduced in Design for Business, allowing you to tackle real business problems using a range of tools and techniques from lean management and service design in a variety of business scenarios. You will develop and apply your problem solving techniques by undertaking a project in industry.
