Course Description

This course is one of a sequence of professional experience courses designed to develop your teaching practice in a work integrated learning context. The focus of this course is on youth cultures and the participation of young people in education and training in contemporary society. With reference to youth-oriented theoretical frameworks and selected youth experiences in education and training settings, you will identify and critique curriculum and policy documents together with national and global developments. There will be opportunity for participation in school and community-based youth settings.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and explain key youth issues that impact upon learner identities and participation in education and training.
  • Apply youth-oriented theoretical frameworks in your work with young people in educational settings
  • Critique current policy and practice related to youth transitions and participation in education and training
  • Demonstrate a capacity to work with school and community-based youth services and how to engage professionally in an education setting with colleagues parents, carers and the community
  • Evaluate a program for supporting and managing youth transitions in education and training
     


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in education
  • Professionally communicate with specialist and non-specialist audiences, as producers and consumers of knowledge, about philosophical and pedagogical propositions, processes and outcomes
  • Use appropriate research methods to design and implement substantial projects, then evaluate and theorize these outcomes as a means to position this contribution to the profession and knowledge area
  • Engage with complex bodies of knowledge and multiple professional skills in order to contribute to your professional identity and career within contemporary contexts

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities, professional experience and individual research.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
