Course Description

In this course you will investigate the design of assets and objects for use within animation, screen and print. Effective design strategies will be explored and you will interpret visual ideas. By examining imagery, you will develop a visual vocabulary to inform your animation and design practice. There will also be a focus on creative exercises including presenting concepts through visual identities and structures, designing various visual elements, typography, storyboarding and layout.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course addresses the following program learning outcomes:

  • Utilise technical skills in motion and interaction design, through a range of authoring systems, to visualise, structure and construct effective linear and interactive media outcomes.
  • Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline.

Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Examine how visual elements can be developed to articulate principles of motion design and composition.
  2. Investigate, plan and develop appropriate motion design solutions for creative briefs.
  3. Apply a range of motion design techniques including character design, storyboards and layouts to visually realise creative ideas.
  4. Present and discuss your visual ideas with peers, in relation to historical and contemporary animation and design practice.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.   In this course you will further develop you understanding of imaging as a communication tool through the analysis of visual design theories and the application of theoretical and technical skills in solving specific visual design problems. This course examines conceptual forms in relation to the still and moving image. Visual styles, genres and techniques will be researched with their social and historical context in visual and time-based media.   Your skills in design and imaging will be enhanced. You will be encouraged to improve your understanding of how time-based imagery works through the study and application of media communication to your own practice. Learning experiences in this course primarily include studio, tutorials, individual and group critique but can include lectures and excursions.   You will be expected to learn during both class time and self-directed study, by applying the direction received in class, and through individual inquiry and research. You will need to spend, in addition to class time, at least an equal number of hours to the class’s duration each week working on assignment tasks and consolidating the knowledge, understanding and capabilities gained in class.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.

There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

You will be assessed upon the creative tasks you undertake as part of Design for Movement. Each of these creative tasks will be assessed individually, with your academic mark and grade for the semester determined by the sum of the individual results.

Assessment may include studio projects, assignments, critiques, reports and presentations, individually and/or in groups.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Full briefs for assessment tasks will be provided in the online platform used for this course.
