Course Description
This course provides an opportunity to develop an experimental design project. You will be introduced to various processes including investigative design, documentation and prototyping. You will also be encouraged to explore alternative approaches to the execution of your design project. The course includes a focus on iterative design, with exploration of how contemporary issues influence design decisions. Sustainability and the social and historical implications of the designed world will also be a focus of the course.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Examine and discuss design and cultural theory as it applies to local, regional and global challenges.
- Plan and develop experimental design projects from concept through to professional prototype.
- Analyse and discuss the creative processes, influences and decisions that inform your design practice.
- Apply a range of creative exploratory techniques and practices to your projects, working independently and/or within a creative team.
- Critique and comment on your own and others’ experimental design solutions.
You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:
- Apply theoretical knowledge, conceptual skills and production techniques to the development of digital media solutions for communications problems.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in your practice or future study.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of face-to-face activities and online such as workshops, lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, class activities and individual research.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include projects, assignments, critiques, reports and presentations, individually and/or in groups.
Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
