Course Description

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. This course is one of a sequence of professional experience courses designed to develop your teaching practice. In this course you will explore leadership responsibilities within early childhood settings and the role of the educational leader as set out in the National Quality Framework. You will investigate management and leadership skills including professional ethics, negotiation and change management, advocacy, quality assurance and working effectively within the broader community. You will review the role of effective communication as managers and leaders within the field.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyse current leadership theories and human resource management strategies impacting early childhood centres.
  • Identify and review policies and procedures for leadership and management in early childhood settings.
  • Employ a range of strategies to clearly communicate with stakeholders involved in early childhood education.
  • Reflect on your role as an early childhood professional and identify opportunities for further personal and professional development.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to legal responsibilities and ethical issues that arise in early childhood settings.


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
  • Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities, readings, critical analysis, reflection, and individual research.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
