Course Description

Transitions can be challenging at any time of life. For the baby, a family entering childcare for the first time, changing program, moving into a different room in a centre all need to be prepared for. Starting school is a major milestone in Australia society which marks out a new phase of a child’s life. Students will examine issues of transition from large transitions to transitions to transitions across a day. Implications for the early childhood education service of family transitional change are examined. This course will also inform students about research undertaken into children’s transition to school. Various approaches taken by schools and early childhood settings are investigated including the implementation of buddy systems of support. The importance of a collaborative approach between stakeholders is emphasised throughout.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Identify and review principles of transition in early childhood literature
  • Investigate a selection of research studies undertaken on transition to school and draw key understandings from them
  • Develop and present transition plans for individual children and their families about to make the transition to school
  • Design daily schedules that support children in their transitions
  • Model communication strategies with families that actively support children through a variety of changes
