Course Description

This course introduces you to the different approaches that influence children’s growth, development and learning. Students will draw from a range of theories such as developmental, sociocultural, behavioural and others to gain understanding on how children’s values, culture and identities are shaped. You will explore contemporary ideas about children, child-rearing practices, culture, environment and other factors influencing children’s growth, development and learning. Teaching and learning approaches which honour diversity of young children, their families and communities and environmental influences on children are the focus.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • discuss the influence of different approaches including social and cultural contexts on young children.
  • explain how dimensions of difference such as gender, age, class, ethnicity, sexuality, belief systems that will impact children’s growth, knowledge, identities, sense of self and place in the world.
  • critically reflect on personal values, beliefs, culture and experiences in respect to children’s lives within and beyond early childhood educational settings. 
  • design and implement an effective learning environment for children, informed by an understanding of the complex range of different perspectives that influence young children and their learning.
  • select a range of teaching resources and strategies that build upon children’s cultural knowledge and social expertise.

You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice.
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational settings.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
