Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Course Description

This course is one of two advanced courses taught entirely in French, from a total of eight courses in French offered at RMIT University.

In this course you will continue to study different aspects of French language and Francophone cultures through a range of authentic written and multimedia materials.

You will extend your communicative competency in French to an advanced level of proficiency, and will gain an enhanced knowledge of the structure and grammar of French through the practice of translation. Emphasis will be placed on the further development of your oral and written skills.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will complement the RMIT capabilities you are developing in your program.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

CLO1. Debate topical social issues in contemporary French speaking cultures with limited or no preparation of the topic using an advanced level of French 

CLO2. Communicate confidently and fluently in both oral and written French on a diverse range of topics 

CLO3. Analyse and reflect on the use of the French language in a diverse range of authentic spoken and written multimedia materials 

CLO4. Apply a wide range of language learning strategies you have acquired, and demonstrate independent learning 


Overview of Learning Activities

A variety of structured in class exercises provide opportunities to develop your skills, with emphasis placed on communicative skill building, guided and natural conversations, and hypothetical situations.


Multimedia teaching and learning resources, and readings relating to sociolinguistics and cross-cultural communication issues will be introduced and discussed. Various role-plays, exercises and games are employed to expose potential difficulties which may arise in cross-cultural communication.

You will be expected to participate actively in many pair and group activities and to use only French. Therefore, regular class attendance is important to support your learning.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.   

You may need to purchase a prescribed text and a recommended language dictionary. Multimedia teaching and learning resources and tools will also be used, and made available through MyRMIT Studies.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  

Assessment Tasks  

1.  2 x reading logs and in-class contributions (week 2-11) 20%, CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 

2. Essay (400 words) 20%, CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 

3. Debate 30%, CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 

4. Final exam (essay 1000 words) 30%, CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4
