None.

Course Description

This course introduces you to validation processes throughout a product lifecycle. These processes are used to demonstrate and document that a specific product can be reliably manufactured, which improves launch success and minimises product recalls.

You will apply cutting-edge technical knowledge and expertise in the creation of products and be packaged with associated services, enabling you to take more responsibility for how manufactured goods are reused and recycled.

You will learn to use a 3D communication tool and integrate it into the virtual design platform to produce modern product documentation that includes animated 3D assembly instructions within a virtual environment, interactive maintenance applications, and accurate product illustrations for training, sales and marketing. You will reuse 3D design data to create high-quality, impactful downstream product information, including documentation, technical drawings, and animations.

You will develop strategies for the integration of computerised maintenance management systems into managing of work flow, in-service and out-service maintenance processes.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes:

1. Needs, Context and Systems

  • Describe, investigate and analyse complex engineering systems and associated issues using systems thinking and modelling techniques

2. Problem Solving and Design

  • Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems

3. Analysis

  • Comprehend and apply advanced theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and specialist bodies of knowledge in the selected discipline area to predict the effect of engineering activities

4. Professional Practice

  • Understand the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
  • Communicate in a variety of different ways to collaborate with other people, including accurate listening, reading and comprehension, based on dialogue when appropriate, taking into account the knowledge, expectations, requirements, interests, terminology and language of the intended audience

5. Research

  • Assess, acquire and apply the competencies and resources appropriate to engineering activities
  • Demonstrate professional use and management of information.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Use the latest relevant commercial software to validate product design, production environment and the analytical testing method
  2. Implement and analyse process validation to ensure a product meets its predetermined quality, requirements and specifications.
  3. Communicate effectively the product information using written, graphics (technical drawings and illustration), animations and interactive 3D experience
  4. Utilise digital technology and information resources to analyse, evaluate and disseminate both technical and non-technical information.
  5. Incorporate design changes directly into the product communication to create up-to-date, accurate printed and interactive materials.
  6. Create assembly work instructions, field service repair manuals, user manuals and training materials.
  7. Produce a range of maintenance procedures to maintain equipment, systems or programs within standard specifications.
  8. Participate in product design and maintenance management, in-service and out-service maintenance processes from other discipline.

Overview of Learning Activities

The learning process is reinforced through problem-based learning using case studies. Face to face lecturing together with practical projects and hands-on practice will be the major learning model. A number of interactive virtual classroom sessions are arranged during the semester enabling interactive exchange of ideas.

Practical worked examples and simple design projects will be used to enhance your learning outcomes. An assignment will provide you the opportunity to apply concepts covered in the lectures to a simulated “real world” consultancy project.

Overview of Learning Resources

Course-related resources will be provided on myRMIT. These will include course notes, and other learning materials generated by the course lecturer(s), references, and approved links to useful material on external web-sites.

All students will have access to the Dassault Systèmes online learning resources, including their world-class industry application notes and case studies.

Overview of Assessment

X This course has no hurdle requirements.

☐ All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).
