Course Description

In this course you will gain a complete and holistic understanding of product lifecycle management (PLM), which represents an all-encompassing vision for managing data relating to the design, production, support and ultimate disposal of manufactured goods.
This course will enhance your knowledge and skills in the life cycle of industrial products and current issues in the product portfolios according to global industry and market shifts. You will develop an enhanced knowledge of the challenges of engineering product management and how to incorporate the creativity of design and market trends into engineering product ranges and portfolios that will eventuate into commercial success.
This course also aims to inspire sustainable thinking across the entire product lifecycle. You will be equipped with the knowledge and capabilities to design and operate processes with minimal impact on the environment.

More specifically, the course includes the following key topics:
• Product lifecycle management and planning
• Global design and collaboration
• Global engineering manufacturing
• Central repository for environmental regulations and stringent regulatory processes
• Evaluation and optimisation of processes according to waste minimisation/cleaner production principles
• Quality and Compliance Management

On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Integrate the various stages of PLM into engineering product ranges and portfolios that will eventuate into commercial success.
2. Work collaboratively and share data across geographically dispersed team and value chains.
3. Evaluate data and information and/or communicate information to the supply chain and valuable supplier quotation to ensure sustainable solutions.
4. Integrate lifecycle management strategies and knowledge to develop new and/or formulate appropriate engineering design solutions in engineering environment.
5. Translate the legal, environmental and international regulatory frameworks into product design, development and manufacturing requirements
6. Integrate a system for corrective and preventative action to track production quality issues
7. Incorporate preventive approaches concentrating on minimising waste, hazard and risk associated with product design, development and manufacturing

Overview of Learning Activities

You will learn this course through lectures, directed reading, classroom discussion, and investigative research. The learning process is reinforced through problem-based learning using case studies.
Lectures will introduce key concepts and theories and tutorials will provide the opportunity to be engaged in interactive class activities, group discussions and class presentations.
Practical worked examples and simple design projects will be used to enhance your learning outcomes.
Assignments will provide you the opportunity to apply concepts covered in the lectures to a simulated “real world” consultancy project.
