Course Description

This course provides you with an overview of meteorology, with particular attention on the applications to aviation. You will study the atmosphere, including temperature, pressure, density, humidity and circulation. You will investigate different meteorology phenomena, which includes clouds and precipitation, thunderstorms and tornadoes, air masses and fronts, and cyclones. You will also study climatology, and aeronautical weather forecasting.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course develops and assesses the following program learning outcomes:

Needs, context and systems:
• Identify, interpret and analyse stakeholder needs, establish priorities and the goals, constraints and uncertainties of the system (social, cultural, legislative, environmental, business etc.), using systems thinking, while recognising ethical implications of professional practice.

Coordination and communication:
• Communicate and coordinate proficiently by listening, speaking, reading and writing English for professional practice, working as an effective member or leader of diverse teams.

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:
• Identify cloud types and the associated hazards
• Interpret various aviation weather forecasts 
• Characterise the structure of the atmosphere, include temperature, pressure, and density variations
• Describe air masses, frontal systems, and regional weather systems

Overview of Learning Activities

You will learn this course through lectures, directed reading, classroom discussion, and investigative research. The learning process is reinforced through problem-based learning using case studies. Where possible, practical exercises may also be utilised.
