You will be expected to have successfully completed CHEM1030 Chemistry of Materials 1, an equivalent course, or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.
Course Description
This course extends the basic concepts of CHEM1030 Chemistry of Materials 1. Topics include Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry, as theory and laboratory work.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- appreciate the fundamental concepts of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry
- be able to apply this knowledge in various laboratory applications.
This course contributes to the development of the following program learning outcomes (PLOs):
1. Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories relating to cutting edge developments in nanotechnology and smart materials.
2. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to future nanotechnology inquiry in theoretical and applied (industry) contexts.
Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities included in this course are attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained, and the subject will be illustrated with demonstrations and examples; completion of tutorial questions and laboratory projects designed to give further practice in the application of theory and procedures, and to give feedback on student progress and understanding; completion of written assignments consisting of numerical and other problems requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and private study, working through the course as presented in classes and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving conceptual and numerical problems.

You will be provided with lists of relevant texts, library resources and freely accessible internet sites; other material will be provided in class. You will be to access course information and learning material through Canvas (through myStudies via myRMIT).
Overview of Assessment
The assessment is based on an end-of-semester examination, laboratory reports, and tests and assignments during the semester.
Forms of Assessment - FROM PART B
The assessment for this course is based on two distinctly separate parts, the theory component (84%), and the laboratory (practical) component (16%). Students are required to obtain a pass in the practical component in order to obtain a pass in the course - it is a hurdle.
